Jame Mosque of Yazd, or Masjed-Jame of Yazd, is one of the most important mosques in Iran. As its name shows, it locates in Yazd. The Jame Mosque of Yazd is also the oldest tourist attraction in Yazd which dates back to 900 years ago. Furthermore, 48 meters in height, it has the highest minarets in Iran. Being a recognized historical site in Iran, it has been printed on the Iranian 200 rials banknote.
The place where the Jame Mosque of Yazd locates today dates back to the Sasanid era. It was a fire temple at that time which turned into a mosque after Islamic era. The first mosque was constructed in the year 536 AH (12th-century) by Amir Alaoddowlah Garshasb. After a while, it destroyed and then Seyyed Rokn Al-Din Nezam Al-Hosseini was the one who reconstructed the mosque to what we see as the Jame Mosque of Yazd today.
From the beginning of the construction of the Jame Mosque of Yazd, till what we see today, many changes have been done on this site. During the Qajar era, widespread demolition and renovation operations took place in the old complex. Since then, nothing has been changed in this mosque, beside some renovation. Therefore, it is a mixture of three old mosques in different eras which took 100 years to become the Jame Mosque of Yazd today.
The architectural style of this mosque is Azari style of Persian architecture. There are decorations of tiling in the whole parts of the mosque, most of them in blue color which creates a sense of beauty.
There are many symbols of Shia through the decoration of this mosque. Most of them can be seen on the walls and the ceilings. The names of the prophets Muhammad, Imam Ali, Imam Hussein, Allah (God) have been written all over the body of this mosque.
The Jame Mosque of Yazd has six entrances installed on different sides of the building. The main entrance is located on the eastern side and boasts a high portal covered with fine decoration. The entrance has a huge wooden door which measures 1.5 meters in width and 3.5 meters in length. The door considered as one of the oldest of its kind.
It’s been said, Fatemeh Khatun, the wife of Amir Chakhmaq, who ordered the construction of the Amir Chakhmaq Complex, ordered to bring the soil of Karbala for decorating parts of the tiling and decoration of this mosque.
The Jame Mosque of Yazd locates in Masjed Jame Street in the old texture of the city. The Saat square, which is one
of the oldest clocks in Iran, is visible at the end of the street. The Alexander Prison is another tourist attraction that is reachable on foot. It will only take 10 minutes to walk to this place from the Jame Mosque of Yazd. The closest hotel to this historical site in Yazd is the Silk Road Hotel, which is a 3-star traditional hotel. A great view of this mosque is visible from the roof of this hotel. There are also great restaurants and cafes around this mosque where people can go and enjoy a portion of traditional food.
The Jame Mosque of Yazd is easily accessible from Imam Street. For the ones who are staying in the old part of the city, it is even reachable on foot. It is also a short walk from Saat Square.
