The Tomb of Hafez, as its name shows, is the dreamy mausoleum of the greatest and the most honored poet of Iran, Hafiz. He was born and died in Shiraz, therefore, this city almost has his spirit. Hafiz died in 1390, but until 65 years later, there weren’t any mausoleum created in his honor. It was in 1452 that someone named Mohammad Yaghmaei, the minister of the time ruler (Abolghasem Goorkani) decided to make a place in his memory. The poet actually was buried in this place, Mohammad Yaghmaei just ordered to make a dome-shaped mansion along with his tomb. Hence, the first construction in the area of the Tomb of Hafez is made almost 500 years ago. The pool was also built at the same time as the memorial.
The Tomb of Hafez was always so important in different eras such as Afsharieh and Safavid. But that wasn’t the last time someone decided to honor Hafiz and make his mausoleum a holy place. The great and beautiful gardens were constructed in 1773 during the reign of Karim Khan Zand. He also ordered to put a marble stone on his tomb which is still there. Some lyrics of Hafiz poems are written on the marble stone.
No other changes occurred in the building of this place till Qajar era, in 1857, during the rule of Tahmasb Mirza. He ordered some restorations in this construction but no big changes took place. However, just a few years after, in 1878, the new governor of the city decided to make a wooden enclosure around the tomb. But one of the ulemas of that time objected to the building a Zoroastrian construction above a Musilim tomb. Therefore, he and some of his followers destroyed the half-built construction. It wasn’t the act that most of the people liked, so they protested against it and the governor ordered the rebuilding of the monument. But the reconstruction didn’t take place till 2 years later in 1901.
It was during the first Pahlavi era, in 1931, that the Tomb of Hafez turned in to what we see today. The new
monument is built by a French archaeologist and architect named Andre Godard. The Tomb of Hafez elevated one meter above the ground an encircled with five steps. The new building around the tomb has eight columns that each of them is ten meters tall. The dome is made of copper and has a shape of darvish’s hat. The ceiling of the dome also has been decorated with colorful mosaics. The yard was extended too. Several rectangular pools have been added to the garden which made a pleasant environment for the tourists.
