A Brief History about Afif Abad Garden
The construction of Afif Abad Garden dates back to the Qajar era, in 1863. It was Qavam ol-Molk II who decided to build such an opulent building in one of the affluent districts of Shiraz, which was Afif Abad. The Qavam family was one of the most powerful and influential families in Shiraz during the Qajar dynasty. You can see other attractions with their names such as Narenjestan Qavam and the Zinat-ol-molk House in this city.
The garden first belonged to the Safavid era but it was damaged during the times. Thus it was Qavam’s turn to make a change in this building. He renovated some parts of the garden and also reconstructed the mansion. He also bought a qanat nearby for watering the garden. Therefore, he made a great complex in this part of the city.
The previous name of the garden was Golshen, but then it passed to Qavam nephew, Afifeh Khatun. She made some changes in the garden. After a while, the garden’s name changed to Afif Abad too. During the Pahlavi era, the garden was gifted to Farah Pahlavi, wife of Mohammad Reza Shah. The second floor of this mansion was where she and her family lived. After the Islamic revolution, the complex was in the military’s hands. Therefore, it became the second military museum in Iran. Today, it is also a museum and a tourist attraction in Shiraz.
